World G-20 ministers to decide on economic stimulus measures

PTI, Gyeongju (South Korea), 22 October : Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said the global economy is still in the woods and the world's 20 leading economies will take a call on whether another round of stimulus is needed to sustain the fragile recovery.
"World economy is still in the woods...We will try to find out whether another stimulus or a calibrated exit policy," Mukherjee said ahead of the G-20 meeting of finance ministers here.
Therefore, this meeting is significant. These leaders will meet and try to find out a mechanism through which the economies could be revived and brought back on correct track, he said. File Photo

Kolkata Metro GM transferred, given lighter duty : Mamata
PTI, Kolkata, 22 October : Kolkata Metro Railway General Manager was today transferred on the orders of Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee close on the heels of an underground train stalling in a tunnel and two coaches of another derailing within a span of eight days in the city.
Banerjee, however, said Amar Nath had been ailing for quite some time, but could not be released earlier because of the heavy rush during the Durga Puja festival. "He has now been given lighter duty. He is a very good officer and there is no reflection on his abilities," she told PTI apparently seeking to dismiss any speculation over his transfer to Chittaranjan Locomotive Works as General Manager.

Bangladesh Govt sanctions 8 textile and fashion institutes
Fibre2fashion.com, 22 October : The Executive Committee of the Bangladesh National Economic Council (ECNEC) which met on 19 October, has sanctioned two proposals for setting up eight textile and fashion designing institutes and training centres, and has also sanctioned a fund of Tk 1.63 billion for the purpose.

FM Dr Dipu Moni to visit Tripura to boost Bangla-India trade
Agartala, 22 October : Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni will visit Tripura 10-11 November to boost cross-border trade and business with India's eight northeastern states.
"During Dr Moni's two-day visit, strategies to further improve trade between Bangladesh and northeast India and development of trade-related infrastructure along the border would be discussed," a senior Tripura government official told reporters today. "A team of senior Bangladesh government officials and a business delegation are expected to accompany Dr Dipu Moni. It will be her first visit to northeast India," he said.
Industrialists and traders in the region would also meet her and discuss further development of trade and investment in both sides. The two countries last March signed a crucial agreement to allow Indian goods to be transshipped to Tripura and other northeastern states through Bangladesh.

Gogoi demands PM to set up technical team for mega dam
PTI, Guwahati, 22 October : Amid protests against the construction of mega dams in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has dashed off a letter to the Prime Minister demanding him to set up a NHPC technical team and a steering committee to examine the safety aspects.
The letter called upon the National Hydro-electric Power Corporation, executing the 2000-mw Lower Subansiri hydro electric project at Gerukamukh on the Assam-Arunachal border, to set up the team consisting seismologists and experts on the subject. The team would examine the technical parameters for the safety and stability of the project, the letter stated.

Al-Gore’s Climate Messenger offers to produce documentary on Bangladesh's vulnerability to C.C.
UNB, Dhaka, 22 October : Lance Simmens, Climate Messenger of former US Vice-President Al-Gore, has offered to produce a documentary film to depict the real plight of Bangladesh due to adverse impact of climate change and mobilize public opinion for the country.
Simmens who is currently a cabinet member at the Office of the Governor of Pennsylvania gave the offer during a meeting with Bangladesh Ambassador to USA Akramul Qader on Wednesday, according to Bangladesh Embassy in W ashington.
Appreciating on-going activities of the Bangladesh government to meet the challenges, Simmens offered to work for the cause of climate issue of Bangladesh and propound to sensitize the global community and mobilize public opinion in favor of Bangladesh.

Youth shot dead by Indian BSF at Indo-Bangladesh border
UNB, Thakurgaon, 22 October : Indian Border Security Force (BSF) shot a Bangladeshi national to death at Jagodal frontier under Ranishankoil upazila early Friday. The deceased was identified as Maziul Islam (24) of Choruigati village in Baliadangi upazila.
Sources said Indian border troops of Kokradah border camp near pillar no.374 opened fire on Maziul early in the morning while he was crossing the border. Captain of 20 Rifles Battalion Lt Col Mahfuz Alam confirmed the incident and said they have sent a letter to their Indian counterparts protesting the firing.

Wanted Maoist leader accused of 21 murder cases arrested
Jhargram, 22 October : Foren Singh Sardar, one of the most wanted Maoist leaders and an accused in nine murder cases including that of a police officer and a CPI(M) leader in West Midnapore district, was arrested by the police this morning.
“Foren Singh Sardar was arrested from Berati crossing at Bankura-Jhargram border today,” Jhargram’s Superintendent of Police Praveen Tripathi said. A resident of a village in Belpahari police station of West Midnapore and an active member of Madan Mahato squad, Sardar had at least 21 cases against him including nine murders, sources in the district police said.

Cyclonic storm to cross Bangladesh-Myanmar coast tonight
Maritime port of Cox’s Bazar asked to hoist danger signal- 5
UNB, Dhaka, 22 October : The cyclonic storm ‘Giri” over the northeast Bay and adjoining area moved northeastwards over the same area.
It was centered at 9 am Friday about 405 kms south of Chittagong Port, 310 kms south of Cox’s Bazar Port and 515 kms of south-southeast of Mongla port. It is likely to intensify further and move in a north-northeasterly direction and may cross Cox’s Bazar-Myanmar coast near south of Teknaf by afternoon/evening today, said a special bulletin of Met office.
Under its influence, squally weather may affect the maritime ports and the coastal regions of Bangladesh. Maximum sustained wind speed within 54 kms of the storm centre is about 62 kph rising to 88 kph in gust or squalls. Sea will remain very rough.
Maritime port of Cox’s Bazar has been advised to hoist danger signal number five instead of local cautionary signal number three. Maritime ports of Chittagong and Mongla have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal number four and three respectively.

All fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain in shelter until further notice.
