Bangladesh Cabinet cancels Daylight Saving Time system

Dhaka, 22 March : The cabinet on Monday cancelled the Daylight Saving Time system considering sufferings and difficulties of different sections of professionals and people permanently.
A meeting of the cabinet with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair took the decision in the morning. Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad told reporters after the meeting the cabinet also decided to sign the Rome Statue of the International Criminal Court. Earlier, a cabinet meeting decided to reintroduce the daylight saving time in the country on 31 March by moving the clocks one hour forward to meet the growing demand for electricity.

Tea estate owner fired at protesters, Child killed, 4 injured
Guwahati, 22 March : A 15-year-old boy was killed and four others were injured on Monday when the owner of a tea estate allegedly fired at angry protesters, who set ablaze two garden factories and the owner's residence, police said.
The victim was identified as class eight school student Pradip Murari, while two of the injured were Suren Ram Bodo and Khasi Ram Bodo, they said. The situation turned volatile after Mridul Kumar Bhattacharjee, the owner of Rani Tea Estate prevented Jogmaya Boro from trespassing through his garden. Alleging that the woman was beaten up and her clothes torn by Bhattacharjee, angry estate labourers and locals protested against the incident. After a spat, the tea garden owner, allegedly fired at them, killing the boy on the spot and wounding four others, police said.
The irate mob then torched the residence of the garden owner, two of the factories, several vehicles and other property, officials said, adding that fire tenders were also prevented from entering the garden.
Locals also claimed that Bhattacharjee had been creating a fear psychosis for the last 15 years by physically abusing them, brandishing pistols, grabbing land and even polluting drinking water sources. Photos : Chinmoy Roy

Maoists begin 48hour bandh in 6states
Jhargram, Kolkata, 22 March : Train movement in West Bengal's West Midnapore district was disrupted when Maoists triggered a blast on Monday, the first day of their 48-hour shutdown in six states.
The shutdown has been called in West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, and in 3 districts of Maharashtra, in protest against the security forces' ongoing Operation Green Hunt.
The blast occurred between Midnapore and Godapiayasal stations on a branch line connecting Kharagpur and Bankura and Purulia districts of the SER, forcing the authorities to stop the services. "The driver of a goods train heard an explosion at Bhalukkhunia in the wee hours. He also saw some banners and flags and informed the authorities. As a precautionary measure, all movement in the line has been suspended," SER chief public relations officer Soumitra Majumdar said. The Howrah-bound Purulia Express and Rupasi Bangla Express are among the trains detained at various stations.

Ganga level dips, sparks water crisis across in South Malda
Malda, 22 March : A sudden fall in water level of the Ganga has caused a severe water crisis across a huge area of south Malda.
As a result of the fall in water level, the arsenic treatment plant at Dariapur under Kaliachak PS has stopped functioning for the last three days, leaving at least 5 lakh people of Kaliachak, Sujapur and Baishnabnagar suffering from a severe drinking water crisis.
Since 2003, the arsenic treatment plant run by the public health department (PHE) has been the only source of pure drinking water in the area. But PHE officials detected the problem around 4.10 pm on 18 March when the water level of the Ganga went down abnormally at Rajnagar Ghat, near the Farakka Barrage Project. File Photo

Biman's cargo plane engine fire forces emergency landing
Dhaka, 22 March : A leased cargo plane of Bangladesh Biman made an emergency landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Monday morning after it caught fire due to technical glitches.
AKM Rezaul Karim, public relations officer of Civil Aviation Authority, told reporters at the airport that an engine of the aircraft carrying garments products caught fire soon after it took off the tarmac of the airport for Muscat at about 9:45am(BDST). A rumour spread that a plane crashed in the capital as the damaged portions of the cargo flight fell on the ground following the fire, he said.

Bangladesh's Sundarbans fire destroys trees on 4acre land
Khulna, 22 March : The fire that broke out Saturday in Chandpai Range of Sundarbans could not be extinguished. The raging blaze has already burnt down different species of trees like sundari and garan of at least four acres of land in the eastern wing of Sundarbans Forest Division, official sources said.
According to Divisional Forest Officer Mihir Kumar, the blaze might have originated from either burning cigarette butts or earthen oven used by Bawalis (wood collectors) or Mouals (honey collectors). Morrelgang Upazila Nirbahi Officer Subrata Kumar Biswas who visited the spot said the fire could not be put out despite repeated efforts by several fire fighting units of Bagerhat and the Navy.
As forest areas under Chandpai range remains dry in summer fire spreads easily during the season, said Sheikh Mizanur Rahman, former divisional forest officer of Sundarbans (East Wing).

Wild bison kills one to death, injures six in Jalpaiguri dist
ANI, Dalsingpara (Jalpaiguri), 22 March : A wild bison turned a major public nuisance after it strayed out of its habitat and walked into Dalsingpara village in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal on Sunday (21 March).
It went on rampage and gored one person to death and injured six others. alsingpara is located near the Chilapata Reserve Forest. Probably, separated from the herd, the bison strayed into this village and literally created havoc among the locals, running to and fro, sparing none who came in its way.
