Security tightened in West Bengal ahead of Independence Day

IANS, Kolkata, 14 August : Exit and entry points to Kolkata have been kept under intense vigil as part of enhanced security across West Bengal ahead of the country’s 64th Independence Day Sunday, a senior police officer said.
“Adequate security measures have been taken to prevent any kind of untoward incidents. Police personnel have been deployed in large numbers to keep a close vigil in important instalments like railways stations and airports and also religious places,” Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Surajit Kar Purokayastha told IANS. “Special security arrangements have been made in the villages along the India-Bangladesh border and across the Junglemahal (Maoist-dominated forested areas of West Midnapore, Purulia and Bankura districts),” he added. Purakayastha said that there is no specific threat perception to the state during Independence Day, but every possible step has been taken to strengthen the security.

Bangobondhu's Dhaka Versity expulsion order withdrawn
Dhaka, 14 August : Dhaka University Syndicate has withdrawn the expulsion order of the architect of Bangladesh independence Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from the law department after 61 years.
The decision came at an emergency meeting of the Syndicate on Saturday. Bangobondhu Mujibur Rahman got enrolled in the department in 1948 and was expelled in 1949 for leading a movement in support of the demand for the increase of fourth grade employees' wages.

Railway protection force to take over Kolkata Metro security
Kolkata, 14 August : Indian railways has decided to hand over the security of Metro Railway to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) completely.
Steps have already been taken to procure the equipment and increase manpower. In the next few days, the RPF will receive Real Time Visual Systems (RTVS) that would allow security personnel to check the contents of briefcases and bags without having to open them.
"Security has been tightened over the last few months. The complete plan will come into place once more personnel are deployed. We already have two sniffer dogs and two more are being trained by the BSF. By the end of 2011, we hope to have 10 sniffer dogs. We require a manpower of 771 to put the plan into place," said Alok Vohra, senior security commissioner, Metro Railway.

Pranab visits ailing Mamata Banerjee at her residence
Kolkata, 14 August : Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today visited ailing Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee at her residence here and expressd the hope that she would recover soon and join Parliament at the fag end of the monsoon session.
Rubbishing media reports that he had been asked to see the Trinamool Congress supremo at the direction of the Congress high command or the Prime Minister, Mukherjee retorted "I have not visited Mamata at anyone's order. I came to see her at my personal initiative". "We had been extremely worried about her health," he added.

At least 50hurt in RMG worker-police clash over 9hrs shift
Narayanganj, Dhaka, 14 August : At least 50 people, including 20 law enforcers, were injured in a clash when police resisted the workers of a textile mill from blocking the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj Saturday morning.
Over 4,000 workers of ACS Textile located at Barpa blocked the highway for more than two hours since 9:00am(BDST), causing severe traffic jam and immense sufferings to the people. The agitating workers demonstrated demanding a nine-hour shift instead of existing 12 hours. The authorities declared the mill closed for Saturday following the workers’ unrest. Police charged truncheons on the workers and lobbed nearly 100 tear gas shells to disperse them.

NIIT launches GNIIT programme for engineers in Kolkata
Kolkata, 14 August : NIIT today launched its industry- endorsed multiple track GNIIT programme for engineers in Kolkata, with the aim of enhancing graduates'' employment prospects. Speaking at the launch of the GNIIT programme for engineers, NIIT President-Global Individual Learning Solutions G Raghavan said that it was specifically designed for engineering students, with emphasis on their curriculum and career aspirations.
Justifying the launch of the programme, NIIT sources quoted NASSCOM''s latest projections that said the IT industry''s headcount addition is expected to double this year to touch 2,00,000 new employees. NASSCOM also said the IT BPO market is expected to grow by 13-15% and the overall domestic market by 15-17%.

Maoists Kill CPI(M) Supporter in West Midnapore district
Jhargram, 14 August : Again a CPI(M) supporter was killed and a suspected Maoist linkman arrested in two separate incidents in West Midnapore district Saturday.
‘A CPI(M) supporter, Choton Mahato of Chandebila village in Kotwali police station area, was found shot dead early Saturday. He was dragged out of his house by a gang of armed Maoists Friday night,’ West Midnapore’s Superintendent of Police Manoj Verma said.

Bhupen Hazarika museum set to come up at Kalakshetra
Guwahati, 14 August : The maestro, his melody and now, a museum. The Srimanata Sankardev Kalakshetra (SSK) is all set to open a museum dedicated to the Dada Saheb Phalke award-winning singer, composer and filmmaker, Bhupen Hazarika. The octogenarian artiste may be ailing, but his young heart is keen to see this dream come true before his birthday on 8 September. However, the completion of the project depends on how soon it receives the promised largesse from the Victoria Memorial authorities in Kolkata.
"This project is very close to our heart as Bhupen-da has contributed greatly in taking Assam's culture beyond the confines of its borders. He is very eager to see the museum inaugurated on 8 September," said Chabin Rajkhowa, secretary, SSK. Christened, Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Museum, it will be located on the premises of Kalakshetra. Victoria Memorial has agreed to provide financial (Rs 48 lakh) and technical support to SSK.
Rajkhowa explained, "They immediately agreed to pay the amount as a mark of respect to the great artist. They were supposed to sanction the funds in the last budget, but somehow, there has been a delay. We have sent a reminder. We are keen on setting up the museum as soon as possible and we have already collected a good number of objects and articles belonging to or associated with the legend as showpieces."
