န Three elephants injured in firing by Nepali police
Jalpaiguri, 11 June : At least three elephants are suspected to have been injured in Thursday's firing at Mechi in Nepal. The 100-member herd, which was shot at by Nepal police immediately after it had crossed into their territory on Wednesday evening, is now back at the Tartari forest in Kurseong. The forest department is now trying to trace the injured animals.
It has been decided that the herd will be driven towards Bamonpokhri. It will be easier to identify the injured pachyderms there. Tartari is a hilly area while Bamonpokhri is in the plains. "We are trying to drive them to Bamonpokhri. We suspect that three of the elephants have got bullet injuries. They need immediate attention," said Y T Aden, divisional forest officer of Kurseong division. န File Photo
