DU authorities urged to preserve the "Glorious Past"
BSS, Dhaka, 25 Octobr : Dhaka University (DU), once the breeding ground for all national movements, is now losing the memories of its glorious past as the authorities are yet to take coordinated measures to protect and preserve those.
Students of this premier educational institution of the country have been deprived of the proper information about the contribution of the university family, students, teachers and others to the cause of the nation. "Our campus is such a place that when one passes through it, one has to go through several historic sites but most of our fellow students are not aware of it. Had there been signboards with brief descriptions of these spots, we could have known about their historic importance," said Mostafizur Rahman, a final year student of DU Political Science Department. The name of this university is inseparable from the Language Movement in 1952, mass upsurge against alien rule in 1969, Liberation War in 1971 and anti-autocratic movements in the 1980s.
At least 20 teachers, 105 students and about 35 employees of the DU sacrificed their lives during the nine-month Liberation War, especially on 25 March night in 1971, according to a list prepared by the DU Central Students Union (DUCSU) collection centre. Freedom Drama In Lalgarh Forest
Jhargram, Kolkata, 22 October : After a negotiations facilitated by BBC journalists, Maoists freed abducted police officer Atindranath Dutta in West Bengal Thursday evening, almost three days after they kidnapped him, in a swap with a group of Maoist activists.
A two-day stubble on Atindra's face and a red scarf saying 'POW' around his neck, sub-inspector Atindranath Dutta stood in the glare of news crew flashbulbs in a Lalgarh village. It was 8.15 pm, 54 hours after he had been captured from Sankrail. Armed Maoists held his hands on their side. More followed behind. Among them was Kishanji, dressed in a blue shirt and camouflage trousers and holding an Insas rifle. The two-day drama that held the state on tenterhooks was finally drawing to a close.

EXCLUSIVE : Stage set for kidnapped police official's release

Jayanta Ghose, Kolkata, 22 October : Jhargram court in West Midnapore district has ordered the release on bail of fourteen tribal women after the government did not contest their bail petition, setting the stage of the release of kidnapped police official Atindranath Dutta as Bengal Newz Exclusively reported yesterday.
Maoist leader Koteswar Rao alias Kishenji promised to release the police official but said the area where he is held hostage is encircled by a huge force of police and para-military and that was causing problems for the release. "They have to stop the operations and allow our fighters a safe passage after we release the police official," Kishenji said. The freed women hail from the troubled Maoist-dominated enclave of Lalgarh and were arrested for alleged complicity with the Maoists.
Atindranath Dutta, the office in charge of the Sankrail police station in West Midnapore district, was kidnapped on Tuesday after dozens of Maoists stormed State Bank Of India and the police station . Two policemen were killed in the encounter.
On Wednesday, the government opened negotiations with the Maoists. A senior police official based in the headquarters in Kolkata spoke to Maoist leader Kishenji over phone and agreed on the swap - the release of the fourteen tribal women for securing the safe homecoming of police inspector Atindranath Dutta.
But on Thursday, the district police and federal para-military forces based around Sankrail, perhaps unaware of the secret parleys, started combing the area, causing hiccups in implementing the swap. "But if all goes well, we should be able to release the kidnapped police official today," Kishenji said.
There was some concern for the fate of the kidnapped official after the beheading of a police inspector Francis Induwar in the neighbouring state of Jharkhand earlier this month. kidnapped official Atindranath Dutta's wife Indrani appealed to the Maoists through television to spare her husband and even visited the West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, who assured her of "expeditious action." န Photos : AP and AFP
