New custom station in Tripura to boost trade with Bangladesh

Belonia (Tripura), Feni, 5 October : Indian and Bangladeshi officials attended the inauguration of the new land custom station at India-Bangladesh border to give fillip to bilateral trade.
The custom station situated in Muhurighat under Belonia subdivision in Tripura connects the state with Feni Land Port in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Minister for Shipping and Land Port Shahajahan Khan inaugurated the Feni Land Port in the Bangladesh side in presence of Industry and Commerce Minister of Tripura, Jiten Chowdhury and the members of the India-Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce, businessmen and government officials of both the countries.
Officials believe that the new land port would help Bangladesh to increase its export to India amounting to one billion US dollar by 2011, which would ultimately reduce Bangladesh’s trade deficit with India. Photo : Parthajit Dutta

China S Airlines to increase Dhaka-Guangzhou flights
Xinhua, Dhaka, 5 October : China Southern Airlines will increase the flights for Dhaka-Guangzhou route from once a week to three times a week from 11 October, according to the company's source on Monday.
The flights from Guangzhou to Dhaka are scheduled for Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, and those from Dhaka to Guangzhou on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Gao Bo, China Southern Airlines representative in Bangladesh, told Xinhua. Since China Southern Airlines inaugurated Dhaka-Guangzhou route on 2 August this year, it has been providing the lowest price for one return ticket at 150 U.S. dollars. READ FULL STORY

1st hearing on Bangabandhu case ends
Dhaka, 5 October : Bangladesh Supreme Court (SC) today adjourned till tomorrow hearing the appeals filed by the convicts in the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman assassination case against their death sentences pronounced by the High Court.
Barrister Abdullah-al Mamun, counsel for convicts Bazlul Huda and AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed, read out 190 pages of the High Court judgment during his first day submission before a five-member bench of the Appellate Division. He told the court that there are contradictions among three judgments delivered by then three HC judges in this case. Of the justices, Md Ruhul Amin had upheld the death penalty of 10 convicts, ABM Khairul Haque of 15 and Md Fazlul Karim of 12. Earlier the trial court had sentenced 15 people to death in the case.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told reporters that the nation had been waiting for the final trial proceedings of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman murder case.

Indian PM Manmohan Singh chairs Ganga River Basin Authority meet
New Delhi, 5 October : Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh here on Monday chaired a meeting of the newly formed Ganga River Basin Authority (GRBA).
The authority has been formed to streamline steps to clean up Ganga. Chief Ministers of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal were invited to the meeting. These are the states through which the Ganga River flows. While Bihar and Uttarakhand Chief Ministers Nitish Kumar and Ramesh Pokhariyal respectively attended the meeting, the other two did not attend.
The Ganga Basin states include Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal in India.

Indo-Bangladesh boundary talks begin
PTI, Shillong, 5 October : Maintenance and construction of boundary pillars will be among the key issues to be discussed during the 129th Indo-Bangla Boundary Conference which began in Shillong on Monday.
"The conference would review the works (of boundary pillar) done in 2008-09 and draw up the programme to be taken up in next year, Director of Bangladesh survey department Rafiqul Islam said before the start of the conference. The meet would review the maintenance of the pillars and lay emphasis on quality of pillars to be erected in 2009-10. Commissioner of Division PW Ingty is leading the Meghalaya side, sources said adding the conference would also look into various aspects of the boundary dispute between the neighbouring countries.

Intellectuals to rally for Chhatradhar: Mahasweta Devi
Kolkata, 5 October : The West Bengal government's veiled warning Satarday to supporters of Lalgarh leader Chhatradhar Mahato today evoked strong reactions from a section of intellectuals here with noted writer Mahasweta Devi saying a big rally would be held in the city in his support.
"I am not supporting him alone. We will bring out a big rally in Kolkata. We will fix the date and time," the octogenrian writer, a Magsaysay awardee, told Bengal Newz today. She said she had met Mahato on a number of occasions and "during these meetings, I used to advise him to campaign against Special Economic Zones or to demand ration cards for the poor". "But I am always against the politics of bloodshed and never asked him to do such politics," she insisted.

Bill on Bangabandhu's family security placed at JS
Dhaka, 5 October : Bangladesh Home Minister Sahara Khatun today placed a bill in parliament seeking to enact a law for giving lifelong special security and secure houses to Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana and their children as ‘conspiracy is still on to kill them’.
The new bill titled ‘Father of the Nation’s Family Members Security Act 2009’ came over eight years into scraping almost a similar act, which was enacted by the previous Awami League (AL) government in 2001. The proposed act however widened the definition of family members of Bangabandhu by including children of his two daughters. In that previous law, which was scrapped in 2001 by the past BNP government, family members meant only Bangabandhu's two daughters who survived the bloodbath that killed the father of the nation and most of his family on 15 August, 1975. Therefore, each of five children of Hasina and Rehana will be entitled to get security of Special Security Force (SSF) and secure houses along with their mothers, according to the provisions of the bill.
Hasina, also Awami League president, has seen several attempts on her life over the years.

Milestone invests Rs 110cr in Godrej prop. in Kolkata
Kolkata, 5 October : Milestone Real Estate Fund has invested Rs 110 cr into a residential project to be developed by Godrej Properties in Kolkota, a Press release from Milestone said.
Though Milestone did not disclose the percentage of stake picked by itself, it said that both iself and Godrej will jointly develop 3 million square feet of residential property, it said. After a long lull in private equity deals in real estate, the action seems to be hotting up with recently Red Fort Capital saying that it has bought additional 4 per cent stake in Parsvnath's premium project in Delhi.

Naga rebels kill 6 in Bangladesh camp, Held at Tripura border
Agartala, 5 October : Five militants of the Isak-Muivah faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM), who had allegedly killed six of their colleagues, were detained while while they were crossing the Bangladesh border into Tripura, officials said Monday.
A large cache of arms and ammunition, including five AK-series rifles and some grenades, as well as Bangladeshi currency were found with the terrorists, aged 21 to 24 years, who were detained late Sunday by troopers of the Border Security Force (BSF). “Following a crisis of food and other essentials, NSCN-IM cadres engaged in a gunbattle with their superiors at their camp at Ghagrachari in eastern Bangladesh Saturday. Killing six senior NSCN-IM militants, they deserted their camps and tried to come to India before they were apprehended by the BSF,” a senior BSF official told reporters on condition of anonymity.

9 dead, 22 injured in a road accident in Murshidabad
Murshidabad, 5 October : Nine people were killed and 22 others injured when a speeding truck collided head-on with a trekker at Shargachi Mohula under Beldanga police station area here today.
Superintendent of Police, Murshidabad, BL Meena told Bengal Newz that the accident took place when a speeding truck dashed against a trekker heading towards Beldanga. Three people died on the spot, the SP said, adding the injured were rushed to Behrampur New General Hospital, where four others, including a child, succumbed to their injuries.
The bodies were yet to be identified, he said and added the condition of four of the injured was stated to be critical.

First woman Governor named for Tripura, replace Dinesh N Sahaya
New Delhi, Agartala, 5 October : Former Delhi Police chief Nikhil Kumar has been appointed the governor of Nagaland and Kamla, former Rajasthan deputy chief minister, has been named the governor of Tripura, a Rashtrapati Bhavan statement said.
Kumar will take over from Gurbachan Jagat, governor of Manipur who is holding additional charge of the governor of Nagaland, and in Tripura Kamla will replace Dinesh Nandan Sahaya. Sahaya, a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and former senior vice president of the Samata Party in Bihar, had assumed the charge in June 2003. Kamla would be the first woman governor of Tripura.

Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia to perform in Dhaka
Dhaka, 5 October : Flute maestro Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia will be in Dhaka for a solo performance. The exclusive concert will take place at the Dhaka Club on 16 October, says a press release. In association with the event management group Web Entertainment Ltd, Dhaka Club is organising the event.
The maestro will arrive, along with three other instrumentalists, a day before his performance. Prior to the concert, a press conference will take place at Dhaka Club on 15 October. The flutist will leave Dhaka the day after his performance.
Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia was born in Allahabad, India in 1938. His father was a wrestler, who wanted Chaurasia to follow his footsteps.
